Oracle is a Database Management System that is used across the world in various companies. Oracle makes use of SQL or ‘Sequel’ language for data manipulation & operations on data. Today, in this article, we will check out the History of Oracle database.

‘SEQUEL’ was developed by IBM Corporation Ltd to use various Codd’s models in the year 1979. During this time, Oracle introduced its first commercially viable SQL implementation. SQL now is known as the Standard RDBMS language. In 1977 two computer programmers named Larry Ellison & Bob Miner started Oracle Corporation. Both Larry & Bob had a good experience in developing database programs for various companies. And they got their first project that was to build the database program for Central Intelligence Agency or CIA.

Overview of Oracle Database

Oracle Database, originally developed by Larry Ellison in 1977, is an RDBMS. It was the first database that was designed only for enterprise grid computing, and the most cost-effective and flexible way of managing applications and information. Enterprise grid computing generally is a computer network where every resource of the computers is shared with another computer in a system; it’s based on the client-server technology.

Most of the Oracle software generally runs on the server and this server makes shared and simultaneous data access possible. Data in the oracle database is logically stored in form of the tablespaces & physically in form of the data files. Essentially, this data has got the separate logical structures & physical structures. This separation allows physical data storage to get managed without even affecting access to the logical storage structures.

History of Oracle

The Oracle database was established by Larry, Bob & Ed Oates on 16th June 1977, as the Software Development Labs. Association Software 3 adventurers changed their name, to Relationship Software Inc. worked in a province till 1982.

This magnificent trio was consistently focused on the database management systems & made their initial database trial with the IBM company and got failed in it. In these subsequent trials, Oracle Republic System that was led by Bob was one huge success. The name of Oracle Corporation was Thereupon that got changed to the Oracle Systems Corporation. In 1995, this was again changed to the Oracle Corporation & this name continues even day.

Features of Oracle Database

The present version of the Oracle Database is 19c and c in it refers to the cloud availability and Oracle makes use of SQL as a query language for other databases.

  • The Oracle database runs on several operating systems. This integrates with 3rd party applications & platforms, so those applications are totally backed by the database.
  • It provides a technical platform for its customers. Oracle database is ACID-compliant & provides data backups.
  • Oracle RAC allows the users to run just one database on several servers. It is quite helpful when the server experiences any outage; this database can move to a different instance & continue performing operations there although others have totally gone down.

Products of Oracle

The products of Oracle generally come in various flavors:

  • Enterprise Edition This flagship Oracle providing with various features and tools for the big corporation.
  • Standard Edition – Oracle standard edition has a basic database management feature for the small & medium-sized stores at a lower cost than the enterprise edition.
  • Standard Edition One – Oracle SEO is uniquely priced for one single CPU server that was used by small businesses.
  • Oracle Express – This has a few DBA features that include read-only replication.

What Do You need to Know About Oracle?

Oracle might not be one of the most stylish DBMS & not the fastest one either. However, in the 90s, it successfully carved out its own niche in a relational DBMS product. Oracle isn’t constrained. Oracle is known to be the versatile database system that is trusted by millions of people particularly as it runs on over 60 odd platforms. Also, Oracle is a highly advanced database platform, which has gained the status of a trendsetter.

Back at an OracleOpenWorld 2006, people were promised several new functions– 482 –exact in its upcoming services from Oracle. Whereas some are understandably minor and most of them are profound. It includes query caching, capture as well as a relay of database workloads and several upgrades. The common arguments that we hear from the Oracle competitor or Oracle-hater include:

It is costly: Oracle is indeed a bit expensive than other DBMS products out there. But it’s definitely worth your money. Besides being the top in the domain, Oracle provides free Oracle XE that will give MySQL run for their money.

It is quite complex: Oracle is flexible and strong. People who were trained for several years as OracleDBA have got tantalizing rewards in the terms of paychecks & perks. Nobody cares how complex this product is providing it is best in the department. With its 11g version, Oracle has taken the customization to a completely new level. You may literally tell how much memory this can use & how much it should dedicate to PGA & SGA. This has allowed users to use one single storage pool to manage many databases.

Accessing Oracle Database

The Oracle database can be accessed only by the client program that runs on the user’s computer. Client applications process requests and present data that is managed by a server. Requests are in form of SQL & PL/SQL statements that the server gets & processes.
